To register a Company or to be appointed as Director in anexisting Company, an individual must have a Director Identification Number (DIN). In this article, we will tell you about how to obtain DIN.
Section 153 of the Companies Act, 2013 read along with Rule 9 of the Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Director) Rules, 2014 provides for the provision for applying for allotment of DIN. The provisions of the Companies Act, 2013 mandate obtaining of DIN before appointment of an individual as a Director of Company and also mandates indication of DIN in any return, information or particulars wherein there is a reference of the Director or such return, information or particulars is related to the Director.
DIN is an 8-digit Unique Director Identification Number allotted by the Central Government to any person intending to become a Director/Designated Partner of a Company/LLP.
DIN application in case of New Company
If a person is intending to be appointed as First Director in new Company then the application for DIN shall be made in Web based incorporation form i.e. Spice+. In this case the DIN would be allocated only after approval of Spice+.

- Self-attested PAN
- Self-attested Passport/ Voter ID/ Driving Licence as Identity Proof
- Self-attested Bank Statement/Electricity Bill/Telephone Bill in the name of applicant not older than 2 months
DIN application in case of Existing Company
In other cases, where the person is intending to be appointed as Director in existing Company then the application for DIN shall be made in Form DIR-3 for allotment of DIN.

- Photograph
- Self-attested PAN
- Self-attested Passport/ Voter ID/ Driving Licence as Identity Proof
- Self-attested Bank Statement/Electricity Bill/Telephone Bill in the name of applicant not older than 2 months
- Board resolution of an existing Company in which individual is intending to be appointed as Director
Form DIR-3 shall be digitally signed by the applicant and also by any of the Director of the Company in which the applicant is intending to be appointed as Director. Post uploading and successful payment, DIN will be allotted and mentioned in the payment challan of the form. The applicant will also receive the DIN allotment letter via email.
